Information for the public

This page contains information for the public relating to what counselling and therapy is, services available who provide this support and agencies who provide short courses and workshops for the public.

Thinking about having counselling?

If you are considering having counselling sessions, download our leaflet for more information.

It is important for clients to be aware that there are no minimum qualifications required, for someone to call themselves a Counsellor. We would recommend clients ensure Counsellors are a member of a professional body, have professional indemnity insurance and appropriate counselling supervision arrangements in place.

Clients can search for a Counsellor on the following professional body websites, to see if they are a member.

Professional bodies:

British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) https://www.bacp.co.uk/

UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) https://www.psychotherapy.org.uk/

National Counselling Society (NCS) https://www.nationalcounsellingsociety.org/

Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC) https://www.acc-uk.org/

British Psychological Society (BPS) https://www.bps.org.uk/
